Monrovia, Liberia: This Front Street structure was overgrown with moss and vines. Though it rests completely abandoned, I couldn't help but marvel at its charm. Through the windows and doors of the building you can see the Mesurado Bridge crossing the river of its namesake, and beyond to Bushrod Island.

Harbel, Liberia: Firestone plantation est. 1926 is the largest contiguous rubber plantation in the world. This tree is one of the first ever planted on the site. Later trees were genetically engineered from them and cloned as shown in the background.

Monrovia, Liberia: These children gathered daily on Front Street. Their mothers, sidewalk merchants sold gum and other snacks to passersby and often they would help. They were always very polite to me. Here they are posing eagerly in front of the door to my office building.

Clay Ashland, Liberia: My primary goal in returning to Liberia was to learn more about my father who passed a few years after we fled. On my first ever trip to his grave, I came across this hibiscus flower and had to shoot it. I remember thinking it problematic that the flower was aiming downward. After capturing the image, I cut it along with many others to form a bouquet to place on the grave. It would be years before I would realized the appropriateness of its solemn posture.

Harbel, Liberia: This dirt path is used daily by the workers of Firestone Plantation to carry rubber from the trees on foot. In 2005 the International Labor Rights Fund filed on behalf of these "tappers" labeling their work conditions "modern day slavery".
